this lamp is based on pure simplicity.
sometimes 3 slabs and a triangle is enough to make a product.
This light fixture is completly hand made out of biodegradable plastic. the plastic is made with the dust of the stone sculptures that I made. By using the dust to make something new, I try to avoid throwing away materials that are still beautiful and bring new results like this lamp.
My process started based on a friendship bracelet I once made: I started to study the different effects of the knots. While studying the characteristics of ropes I found out that the ‘popypropyleen rope’, also known as ‘boat rope’, has the best thickness and also a big variety in colors what would give an extra touch to the design.
I started with knotting it as a carpet, tried to roll it up and discovered a stool. When you turn the stool it becomes a seat for children or a footbench. Multidesign! This knotted unit can be perfectly used in small living areas as a carpet and in one minute as a rolled-up stool as well: it is better to (re-) use it in multiple ways.
Just like the rope itself it becomes a strong(er) object when the knots are pushed against eachother when you sit on it: it won’t collapse.
Because of it being a recycled object with many functions, it’s very cheap and durable. It’s strong and waterresistant.
The worldwide present of harbors and fishing activities makes this design also international and local applicable: the material doesn’t need to be imported, it is present in almost every country near water.
Also fishermen can learn how to knot their ‘old rope’ together to re-use it as a convenient small seat at the dock’s.
this scenography was made for the theater piece rhinoceros. the story had a dark vibe and gave it a hospital atmosphere. the scenography was based on this feeling. I also wanted to gave the audience the space to make up their own mind so it became an abstract installation.
What if you were given the opportunity to live / learn for a year with a master in your profession? in this model this is the case for an opera singer and his student. in this house the training sessions would be specifically about stage fright.
This is a project for an old soapbrand, Ike. the assignment meant that we had to design a store installation. for this project I chose to make 1 massive block in which everything is present.
